Producers
Coffee dried using renewable energy technology is available
from COOCAFE in Costa Rica, and Cooperative San Isidro in
Nicaragua. A variety of high-quality coffees are available,
including coffee produced with organic, fair trade, and ISO14001
certifications.
Costa Rica:
Cooperative Montes de
Oro is a member of the Consortium COOCAFE R.L. in Costa Rica.
The cooperative of nearly 500 producers is located in the buffer
zone of the Arenal Tilaran Conservation Area.
The Cooperative, which produces approximately 12,000 quintales
per year, is recognized for its achievements in sustainable
production and processing. Montes de Oro's wet and dry
processing facilities are ISO14001 certified and the cooperative
operates its own organic fertilizer plant, recycling pulp and
parchment from the washing and milling plants.
Montes de Oro has introduce the use of artificial lagoons with
aquatic plants for purification of waste water from its wet
processing center, as well as solar coffee drying systems at the
dry processing center.
Montes de Oro can provide coffee under Fair Trade certification,
organic certification, and ISO14001 for consistent quality and
low environmental impact.
COOCAFE R.L. is formed from nine cooperatives representing 3,500
small producers. Annual production averages 60,000 quintales and
includes a variety of offerings including Hard Bean, Medium Hard
Bean, Good Hard Bean, and Strictly Hard Bean qualities. COOCAFE
is at the forefront of implementing sustainable production and
processing methods and is leading the industry in the adoption
of Solar Drying Systems for increased quality and forest
preservation.

Nicaragua:
Cooperative San Isidro is has been producing organic coffee for
many years and is now drying and milling coffee for its members
under a program funded in part by the Global Environment
Facility and the Austrian Development Agency. The cooperative is
producing nearly 7,000 quintales from the mountains surrounding
Boaco.
Among San Isidro offerings are:
Café Filas Verdes, certifide organic arabica coffee, Strictly
High Grown (SHB), shade grown. Produced by small coffee farmers
working in harmony with nature in the heart of the Amerrique
mountain range.
